✏️ Dearest data fam

Oh it feels good to be back! It’s just over a month since we opened the Citizens’ Office of Synthetic Memories and wow has it flown by. If you want to pass through and have your memories reconstructed by the team then there’s still time to book a slot before we break for summer at the end of July! And if you can't make it to see us in Barcelona then as consolation here’s a whole heap of data-based inspo for you to get stuck into wherever you are...

International Women’s day might be a couple months ago, but the gender pay gap will be here with us until at least the year 2067 according to research.

Currently sitting at 19%, this is a significant figure but one which many find hard to comprehend. Max Siedentopf decided to get literal with visualising this figure, sawing half off everything in sight to really drum home the point.

If this looks familiar then you might have seen our project, The Home of Absence, last year. We took slices out of everyday objects in the home, to physicalise the poverty gap.

Have you ever felt a burning desire to know the exact dimensions of an armadillo? Well then this site may be of interest, as they have seemingly measured the entire universe and catalogued it all for your compulsive browsing pleasure. Armadillos aside, we are what we measure and our reality is found in the objects that we deem worthy of converting into data.

📱 Post of the month

This pride month Matt Bernstein shared how artists have found responses to the heavily-loaded question of why the queer community is so young. What we find are a number of profound pieces that put into perspective the impact that AIDS had in the 80s and 90s.

Hiding the technology that is keeping our installations ticking over is a constant challenge. In this music video Yerai Cortés embraces all elements of the performance and brings tech centre stage, mixing a simple set up of vocalists with creatively arranged cables and lighting. A beautifully simple visual narrative that reflects the fusion of traditional folk music and modern production techniques.

At long last the art of the GIF has an online-gallery where we can celebrate this humble medium, inviting anyone to express their creative intentions in 128kb or less. Though many act as through digital memory is limitless, it all has a physical footprint so we greatly admire a project that promotes the mentality of less is more.

And last but not least, here’s a little treat from our 10th birthday bash. We invited some good friends to whip up a live Data Newsletter - a series of talks on topics at the heart of our DDS journey. Each guest speaker brought a resource they thought we could learn from, and we’ve wrapped them all up into an archive that we are sharing with you. Enjoy!

And that’s a wrap. If summer has got you feeling nostalgic then why not book yourself an interview at the Citizens’ Office of Synthetic Memories before we meet again!
